Herb Brooks took to the game of hockey like a duck to water, frozen water that is. He learned to skate at the age of four and his playing career took off from there, first leading his high school team to victory with a game winning goal in the 1955 state championship and later took a turn under Coach John Marriucci at the University of Minnesota (Bernstein 2).

Brooks’ career continued on after his stint in college. Many remember the scene in “Miracle on Ice” a film in tribute of the 1980 team, where it is mentioned that Brooks was cut from the 1960 Olympic team that later went on to win gold. This is true, but many forget that although he was cut from that team, he did play on both the 1964 and 1968 Olympic teams as well as several US National teams (1).
