After his stint in the college and Olympic ranks, Brooks would go on to coach the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League, where he would coach for five years total. While with the Rangers Brooks was named NHL Coach of the Year. After a one year reign as the head coach of St. Cloud State University, Brooks would settle down in his home state as the head coach of the Minnesota North Stars in 1988. After only one season, Brooks took time off from hockey to pursue his career in business.
In 1992 Brooks couldn’t handle being away from hockey so he got the job as head coach of the New Jersey Devils, and later went on the coach the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1999-2000.
